When Waite Phillips applied for a cattle brand,
someone else was already using the "W" that he wanted.
So Waite called it Double U-Bar Ranch instead, or UU.
Sometimes he would refer to it as "Usually Useful".

The "Boys Life" Mail-burro mascot, Don Juan Pedro Ladino
de Philmonte, but better known as 'Pedro the Mailburro',
always signs his answers to Scouts letters to
The Hitchin' Rack as UU        This is not a coincidence!
